Residents in Kettering are being asked their views about the creation of a legal order which can be used to better deal with nuisance noise and anti-social behaviour. Kettering Council wants to create the Public Spaces Protection Order which would cover certain parts of the town centre and some neighbouring residential areas. The consultation was launched this week and will last six weeks. A final decision is due on Friday, April 24. Kettering Council has said the order could be used to prevent late night noise from young people gathering at the Morrisons in Kettering, or on the Market Place – both of which have attracted complaints from residents. A spokesman for the council said: “A PSPO is a new provision, created by the 2014 Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, which is intended to deal with any particular nuisances or problems in a defined area that are detrimental to the local community’s quality of life. “This is done by imposing conditions on the use of that area which apply to everyone. “The aim is to stop individuals or groups committing anti-social behaviour in public spaces.” The order would be able to prohibit activities such as the drinking of alcohol on the street and begging. The spokesman added: “Enforcement can be undertaken by council officers, and other groups the council may designate, but principally police officers and PCSOs. “The police will additionally have the power of detention.” Link.
